Zliten Harbour was first established in 1925. It was reopened in 1983 with a capacity of 60 fishing boats plus the required facilities such as cooling, lifters, maintenance locations, etc. The harbour’s labor force is 300 fishermen and 70 workers.

There is an ongoing study to improve the harbour so it rooms trawlers. A budget of forty-five million Libyan dinars is planned.
